To fix a blurry photo, first identify what made it look blurred. Softness in every direction usually means the camera focused at the wrong distance. Streaks in one direction usually mean the camera or subject moved. Visible square pixels and jagged edges mean that the image has too little resolution rather than true blur.
To unblur photos effectively, match the repair to the cause. The quick guide below will help you choose the right Focus Magic filter before the detailed examples show how to recognize more difficult cases.

A free online unblur tool can be convenient when you want a quick automatic enhancement. Dedicated software is more suitable when the photo is important, you need to inspect the result at full size, or you want control over the mathematical repair rather than one generic enhancement.
Focus Magic is downloadable software for Windows and Mac. Out-of-focus blur spreads detail in every direction. On Windows, Auto-Focus is the preferred starting point because it detects the Blur Amount and can handle different amounts of blur across the same photo. Open the image, click an area that should be sharp, and compare the Low, Medium, and High Blur Amounts. Use the lowest setting that restores the wanted detail without sharpening a deliberately soft background.
For more selective control, or when using the plug-in on a Mac, measure the diameter of a circular point source and use that as the starting Blur Width. If only one part of the photo is blurred, select that area before applying the filter so already-sharp areas are left alone. Motion blur stretches detail in one direction. Look for small highlights that have become streaks or double dots. If there are no suitable highlights, compare edges running in different directions: edges parallel to the movement stay sharper, while edges across it become wider.
Choose Fix Motion Blur, align the direction indicator with the blur, and then slowly increase the blur distance until a streak or pair of dots becomes one point. In the example below, the blur direction is about 130 degrees; the distance is adjusted until the double points merge. See the full motion-blur removal guide.

Low resolution is not the same as blur. When enlarged, a low-resolution image shows square pixels and jagged edges rather than circular or directional smearing. The Windows Increase Resolution filter enlarges the image by a factor of two or four while reducing those jagged edges. See the Increase Resolution tutorial.


When the cause is not obvious, zoom in and inspect small shiny objects and high-contrast edges. There are three common patterns:
The best clues are shiny objects, which either become circles of light, streaks of light, or look like a square pixel.

This medicine bottle in the background of a photo has light reflecting off it. This is a point source which has become a circle when it became out of focus. The image on the right has zoomed into that point source and shows that the diameter is about 18 pixels (the distance between the black dots).
Note that we have placed the black dots approximately in the middle of the blurred edges.

This image of some trees in the background of a photo has a faint point source, indicated by the arrow.


Sometimes you can have a point-source bonanza as shown here. These two photos, one taken out of focus and one taken shortly afterwards in focus, clearly show the “circle effect” for point sources.

Here is another difficult one. There are two point sources in this blurred picture of a car's license plate. The diameter of the point sources determines the Blur Width setting to use in Focus Magic (see the Tutorials page).

This is an example of a “zoomed in” photo which — interestingly enough — would normally be considered to be “in focus”!
It does, however, have a point source with a diameter of a few pixels and can therefore be sharpened a little. Nearly all photos can benefit from sharpening with a Blur Width of around 1 to 3. Some Focus Magic users sharpen all their photos with a standard Blur Width of 2.

In this photo of a tiara there is clear motion blur (vertical streaks).

In this old photo of a bicycle in front of a car, you can see many point sources (as indicated by arrows) which have become blurred at about 45 degrees. They look a bit like double exposures. This is because the camera went “slow — fast — slow”, with more light being captured at the beginning and end.

When this photo was taken, the camera was moving at about 45 degrees.

When point sources are hard to find, looking at edges may be the best way to find the blur direction. In this case the edge of one spoke is perfectly in focus. The rim of the wheel is also perfectly in focus in about the same direction. The opposite side of the rim is not quite as well focused, but the blur direction is validated by other parts of the image.

In this photo of an old wooden tennis racket, the two yellow arrows show edges that are in focus, while the light-blue arrows show edges that become wider and more blurred. The sharp edges show the direction of the blur.

When zooming in to this photo of a poppy, there is no blur on the edges, but the edges are all blocky. Each pixel has, in effect, become a square. This image would be much better if it had more squares that were smaller.
Results depend on the type and severity of the problem. Focus Magic can recover useful detail when the blur pattern is measurable, but no filter can guarantee a perfect reconstruction when the original contains very severe blur, heavy noise, clipped highlights, compression damage, or too few pixels. Low-resolution enlargement can create smoother edges, but it cannot reveal every detail that the camera failed to record.
Work on a copy of the image and compare the preview carefully. Use the least aggressive setting that recovers useful detail while keeping the result natural. If stronger settings create noise, ringing, or halos, reduce the setting.
