Windows Plugin Installation Notes

Photoshop Elements 6 Install Notes

Focus Magic works with Elements 6 on a Windows PC (32-bit versions only), but it needs to be installed manually, as follows:

  1. Download and install Focus Magic.
  2. Once installed, go to the Focus Magic folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Focus Magic
  3. Copy the "FocusMagic.8bf" plug-in file.
  4. Paste the "FocusMagic.8bf" file into the appropriate plugins folder for your version of Elements.*

* Please consult Adobe documentation/support if you're unsure which folder to manually install plug-in files into.

Photo-Paint X4 Install Notes

Focus Magic works with Photo-Paint X4 on a Windows PC (32-bit versions only), but it needs to be installed manually, as follows:

  1. Download and install Focus Magic.
  2. Once installed, go to the Focus Magic folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Focus Magic
  3. Copy the "FocusMagic.8bf" plugin file.
  4. Paste the "FocusMagic.8bf" file into the appropriate plugins folder.*

* Please consult Corel's documentation/support if you're unsure which folder to manually install plugin files into.

PaintShop Pro Photo X2 Install Notes

Focus Magic works with PaintShop Pro Photo X2 on a Windows PC (32-bit versions only), but it needs to be installed manually, as follows:

  1. Exit Photo X2 if it's running and create a folder called "PlugIns" in C:\Program Files\Corel\Paint Shop Pro X2.*
  2. Download and install Focus Magic.
  3. Once installed, go to the Focus Magic folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Focus Magic
  4. Copy the "FocusMagic.8bf" plugin file.
  5. Paste the "FocusMagic.8bf" file into the "PlugIns" folder you created in the first step.

* You can skip Step 1 if the "PlugIns" folder already exists.

Canvas X Install Notes

Before installing Focus Magic, you need to make sure that Canvas X knows where to find the plugins folder, as follows:

  1. If you don't already have a plugins folder, create one called "Plugins", such as C:\Program Files\ACD Systems\CanvasX\3.0\Plugins.
  2. Start Canvas X.
  3. Click the "File" menu and select "Configuration Centre".
  4. Select "General" and then "Painting".
  5. Browse to the "Plugins" folder.
  6. Click "OK".
  7. Exit Canvas X.
  8. Download and install Focus Magic.

FotoCanvas 3 Install Notes

Before installing Focus Magic, you need to make sure that FotoCanvas 3 knows where to find the plug-ins folder, as follows:

  1. If you don't have a plugins folder, create one called "Plugins", such as C:\Program Files\ACD Systems\FotoCanvas\3.0\Plugins.
  2. Start FotoCanvas.
  3. Select "Photoshop Plug-ins" from the "Filter" menu.
  4. Select "Plug-in Options".
  5. Click "Add" and select the plugin folder you wish to use.
  6. Click "OK".
  7. Exit FotoCanvas.
  8. Download and install Focus Magic.
  9. Start FotoCanvas, open an image, and click "Filter", "Photoshop Plug-ins", and then "Focus Magic".

Digital Image Pro 10 Install Notes

Digital Image Pro is quite old now (the last release was in 2006), so it only works with Focus Magic Version 4, which can be downloaded from the bottom of the Download page.

Before installing Focus Magic, you need to create a plug-ins folder, as follows:

  1. If you don't have a plugins folder, create one such as C:\Program Files\Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10\Plug-ins.
  2. Start Microsoft Digital Image Pro.
  3. Select "Options" from the "Tools" menu.
  4. Select "Plug-in Filters Options".
  5. Select the plug-in folder you wish to use.
  6. Download and install Focus Magic.
  7. Start Digital Image Pro, select an image, click "Effects", then "Plug-in Filters", and choose "Focus Magic".

Affinity Photo 1.5 - Windows Install Notes

In a future update, Focus Magic will automatically install itself to Affinity Photo's default plugins folder: C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Photo\1.5\Plugins

Until that time, you can manually install it using one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use Affinity's Default Plugins Folder

  1. Download and install Focus Magic.
  2. Go to Focus Magic's program folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Focus Magic
  3. Copy the "FocusMagic64.8bf" plugin file.
  4. In Affinity Photo, go to Preferences.
  5. Click "Open Default Folder in Explorer" to open the default plugins folder.
  6. Paste "FocusMagic64.8bf" into the default plugins folder.
  7. In Preferences, enable "Allow 'unknown' plugins to be used".
  8. Close Preferences and restart Affinity Photo.

Method 2: Use a Custom Plugins Folder

  1. Download and install Focus Magic.
  2. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Focus Magic.
  3. Copy the "FocusMagic64.8bf" plugin file.
  4. Paste it into your custom plugins folder, or create a new folder.
  5. In Affinity Photo, go to Preferences.
  6. Under "Plugin search folders", click "Add".
  7. Find and add the custom plugin folder used in Step 4.
  8. Enable "Allow 'unknown' plugins to be used".
  9. Close Preferences and restart Affinity Photo.

Important Note

It has been noted on Affinity's forum that plugin support is still a work in progress, so some technical issues may be encountered when using any plugins with Affinity.

PhotoImpact 11 Install Notes

If you see multiple instances of Fix Motion Blur and Fix Out of Focus Blur in the filters menu, turn off the additional folders option in PhotoImpact as follows:

  1. Click "File", "Preferences", "General" (or press F8).
  2. Under "PhotoImpact", go to "Plug-ins" and untick any additional folders.

IrfanView - Windows Install Notes

Currently only the 32-bit version of IrfanView works with Focus Magic.

  1. Download and install the IrfanView 32-bit Windows Installer.
  2. Download and install the All Plugins - IrfanView 32-bit Windows Installer.
  3. Download and install Focus Magic Version 5.  This puts the Focus Magic plugin into the correct location.
  4. Run IrfanView (brown teddy bear icon) and open an image.
  5. Click the "Image" menu, click "Adobe 8BF PlugIns", and click "Filter dialog...".
  6. If "Fix Out-of-Focus Blur" is not listed, click "Add 8BF Filters (Files)" and select FocusMagic.8BF from C:\Program Files (x86)\IrfanView\Plugins.
  7. Double-click "Fix Out-of-Focus Blur" or "Fix Motion Blur" to launch the Focus Magic plugin.
